• Combine the Dr Pepper, juice, and ginger in a saucepan over medium heat and bring to a low simmer. Don’t boil the liquid, as this will make the soda flat.

• Place 1 slice each of lemon and orange in each of four mugs or cups and divide the hot beverage evenly among them. Serve immediately.

Snow Falling on Pines

Dissolving matcha (Japanese green tea powder) in hot water yields a velvety dark green liquid reminiscent of the pines and moss in Japanese tea gardens. Tea made with matcha powder tastes pleasantly bitter, a flavor that’s complemented here by the blanket of lightly sweetened whipped cream floating on top. If you serve this in glasses or drinking bowls, you can watch the cream slowly striating into the matcha—a lovely spectacle that inspired the name of this drink. To add a holiday touch, sprinkle a glimmer of red sanding sugar on top of the cream.

Serves 2

2 cups water, boiled and cooled to 170°F (about 4 minutes)

2 teaspoons matcha powder

¼ cup heavy cream, lightly whipped with 1 teaspoon sugar, for garnish

Red sanding sugar for garnish (optional)
